If you didn’t know, it is officially hurricane season in Houston, Texas. This unpredictable season goes from June 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018. If you are new to Houston and don’t know what to expect, lets chat a bit.
As a resident of this great city the most important thing that you can do during this time is to prepare for the worst. Last year, Hurricane Harvey devastated our area and everyone was touched in some way by this storm. You may not have lost your home, but being stuck indoors for days is not fun; especially if you were not prepared with the appropriate supplies. One of our biggest problems is that we never think that we will have a big storm and most of the time we are right, but all it takes is that one time to change everything.
This year, PREPARE. Many of our local news outlets publish a hurricane preparedness list. This is my go to hurricane prep list – its comprehensive, but can be tailored to me your needs.
Another thing to make sure of is your home insurance or renters insurance if you are not a homeowner. Check with you insurance agent to make sure that you have the appropriate coverage in the event of a hurricane. One of the worst feelings in the world is to lose everything and then find out that the insurance that you have been paying for does not cover your loss.
If you are renting an apartment or home, invest in renters insurance. It does not cost a lot, and it will be worth every penny you spend if you experience any loss of property or belongings.
Finally, let’s be good neighbors to one another. If you live near or have knowledge of a senior citizen or elderly person who may need assistance in the event of bad weather, reach out to them. Help them prepare their hurricane kit or even be so kind and include enough provisions in your kit to cover your elderly neighbor or family member.
My wish is that we don’t have any hurricanes this year, but if we do, its better to be safe than sorry.
